  1. If it is indeed a FEG forgery, the serial number coincides with a FEG P9 from the early 1990's. I'm no expert on FN serial numbers, so I'll leave it at that and let the experts make a more authoritative appraisal of the gun. I have to say, though, that I've never seen an FN or Browning HP with tool marks that bad on the barrel cam lug.
  2. Browning rifles built up to 1968 (69) did not have the serial numbers on the receivers for the most part. The Gun Control Act of 1968 changed things a bit in regard to serial number placement. FN rifles were produced for Sears, Western Auto, and a lot of other retailers.
  3. & Sako High Power Rifles. Introduced in 1959. Date of manufacture code included with the serial number. Post 1958 manufacture dates.

Then I tried '1958 FN browning rifle' and found 1 result with a SN that started with 'L', it was LXXXX with 4 numbers. The blue book 28th edition states this model came out in 1958, and only had a letter prefix for the first few years dependent on the grade of rifle.

The production of the BAR high power rifle began in 1968. The BAR Mark II series was introduced in 1993 and is still in production.

1967-68 BARs had serial numbers that read like this: 1234M8. The number after the M designates the year. 7 means 67. 8 means 68.

Starting in 1969 Browning began the actual number using two digits for the date of manufacture, followed by an M. The number before M is the year.
M=BAR High Power Rifle. This was then followed by the serial number beginning with 1000.
Example: 69M1000 = A 1969 BAR High Power rifle with a serial number of 1000.

1976-1992 In 1975 Browning standardized its serial number identification which it followed until 1998.
